A visionary leader is one who has a clear vision and has a clear plan of action so that vision can be followed though by teachers, students, and parents.
In 610, I focused my student discipline paper on student tardiness. The recommendations through my research were to use positive behavior support to reduce tardiness (Johnson, Lyons, & Griffin, 2008). It was also found that tardy sweeps would eventually increase the amount of tardiness (Lindsey, Jungwirth, Pahl, & Lindsey, 2009). In the 2013-2014 school year, Vista High School implemented a lockout program in which teachers closed doors in the beginning of the period. Students who were late would go to the office to receive a lockout slip. Initially the program was effective and reduced student tardiness. However, over time, the accountability with the program |
decreased. Teachers were unaware of the procedures and long lines of students would be waiting to receive their late slip from the office. Students were spending more time resolving procedural issues than they were in the classroom. This has shown me that effective leadership must have a clear vision when implementing a program so that it is sustainable.
For 626 B, my field study was to volunteer to coordinate senior exhibition, a program in which all senior students create an oral presentation towards a group of teachers, parents, and community members. No teachers volunteered to be in charge of the program. Months later the staff was informed at a meeting that senior exhibition would be canceled. Many teachers were upset that the the decision was not clearly communicated to |
the staff. After this, my coworker and I volunteered to be in charge of the program and were selected. In running this program, it is my intent to start by developing the purpose of the program. Once the purpose of the program is developed, then all decisions can be made through those goals in mind.
As a visionary leader, I strive to include my staff if there are any cultural changes that need to be made at the school. By increasing the buy-in from teachers, it will be easier to facilitate changes on campus. Because of this, I am able to appreciate the diversity that exists on campus and will continue to strive to address and identify barriers that may hinder the accomplishment of a school's vision. Having a clear vision allows me to leverage a variety of resources necessary to accomplish a school's goals with the support of my administration and peers. |
