A school administrator must be able to collaborate with diverse families and respond to the needs of parents, students, and the community.
I understand the importance of working with diverse families through my work in the 618 class. In this class we created a case study that identified an achievement gap within the school and developed an action plan to reduce the gap. For the second part of the case study, we researched relevant literature that would be useful in supporting an action plan to lessen the achievement gap. For my action plan, I looked at socioeconomic status (SES) and Hispanic students and how these variables affect student performance on state tests. It was found that a student who was low SES and Hispanic had a high rate of low success on the California State Tests. Another reason why it was important to include Hispanic students is that the population |
of Hispanic students at Vista High School has been consistently rising 2.5% every school year while the total population of students is remaining steady. The action plan allowed me to use SMART goals (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time sensitive) to propose a budget that would allocate resources to provide critical training for teachers when new programs are introduced on school sites to reduce the gap in achievement.
My development of passion for diverse families can be seen through my master’s thesis: The Transgender Experience Impact on Secondary School Choice: A Case Study. Transgender youth have a high rate of depression, suicide, and absenteeism. Because of this, the case study set out to understand the factors that parents of a transgender child might use when choosing schools for their child. Laws, such as AB 1266 have been implemented to protect the |
gender identity of transgender students. Through this study, it was found that a supportive school environment is the best way to provide a transgender child with academic success in schools. This information may prove useful for educational leaders, teachers, students and parents who want to provide a safe and nurturing environment for transgender students in school.
As an administrator, I must be able to respond effectively to the diverse needs of the student, family, and community. My work with a diverse group of students has shown that I have high respect for all students and am able to help diverse students achieve their aspirations and goals. By developing partnerships with local businesses and communities, I will continue to strengthen the school to support the equitable access of learning to all groups of students. |
