An educational leader understands how to manage a school site and its resources to create a safe environment for learning.
A strong educational leader is one who understands the organizational management of a school and how different systems play a role in making a school successful. In Lawrence’s 612 class, we used the nine literacies of: politics, economy, culture, morality, pedagogy, information, organization, spirit, and time as factors that affect organizations. In this assignment I had the opportunity to determine the key players for each literacy, the impacts that the literacy has on the school site, the positive and negative actions connected to each literacy, and the recommendations based on all of those factors. This assignment was completed early on in the program. Upon rereading the assignment, I have gained an appreciation for all that was covered in the educational administrative credential program at CSUSM. In politics and economy, I wrote about the interconnectedness between the district office and teacher union. This parallels the learning from two years ago in that the school district I work for is currently in impasse |
for contract negotiations. In cultural literacy it is important to understand the cultural dynamics of a school site and always be reflective in how cultural shifts in teachers, students, and administration can affect the productivity of a school. By keeping the system of the nine literacies at the forefront of decision making, I will be able to make the right decisions that will impact other systems and student learning.
In 626 B, my goal was to work with the administrative team in developing next year’s master schedule at Vista High School. Much of the progress to complete this assignment was put on hold because the district had to approve the number of full time employees that would be at the school site. Currently, the school district and teacher's union are in impasse. One of the main requests from the teacher’s union is to reduce the class size based on a memorandum of understanding in the previous contract. During the financial crisis in 2008, it was agreed that the district would increase the class size to maintain solvency in the district’s funds. During this time, many teachers were let go or moved to sites within the district based on seniority because there was less demand on |
how many full time employees were needed to maintain class size throughout the district. The teachers have not had a raise in eight years and the teacher’s union wants to move back to the original class size reduction. In order to do this, the district will need a huge influx of money to maintain the teacher union’s demands for negotiating a new contract. The teacher’s union is hoping that the LCFF will help to support the cost of higher salaries and having less students in the classroom. In addition more teachers will need to be hired if a contract is approved that will reduce the class size of teachers. It is important to understand the interrelatedness of all the elements of a system and how they push and pull at each other.
As a school administrator, I must provide a safe and well maintained school environment that fosters student learning and the professional growth of the staff. I will continue to utilize the nine literacies to understand how systems interrelate and align resources to support the learning of all students. I will continue to assess the effectiveness of the programs and staff on campus to give students the best opportunity for success after high school. |
