An educational leader creates and maintains the culture of a school through high expectations and rigorous work while being able to provide equity amongst all members of the school's community.
One of the main goals of an educational leader is to be an instructional leader. As an instructional leader, one must provide rigorous classes for students. For one of my field work assignments, I integrated my desire to propose and approve a new class: International Baccalaureate (IB) course: Environmental Systems and Societies (ESS). The IB high school diploma provides a unique educational experience in which students are able to learn from multiple disciplines and provide students with rigorous coursework that will prepare them for the university. I learned how to effectively communicate with district personnel and incorporated the new Next Generation Science Standards into the ESS curriculum. Through the IB group 4 assessment, I was able to collaborate with my peers in offering an educational experience to the students that is cross curricular. For example, IB students from |
IB physics, IB biology, and IB ESS had to work together this year to create a research project on energy. Students in one science class were able to learn cross cutting concepts in other classes that is indicative of the Common Core State Standards. I then furthered my professional growth by attending a Level 2 IB conference to gain insight into implementing the internal assessments (labs) into the curriculum. I learned how important it is to provide these experiences to staff so that they can, in turn, give students the best opportunity for success after high school.
Another professional growth and culture building experience was learned when completing the personal learning network assignment in Dr. Villarreal’s 614 class. Communication allows an administrator to effectively build relationships between parents, students, staff, and the community. Chance said, “Communication is an essential function of any organization. Schools . . . rely on the cooperation and collaboration of many people to achieve their goals” (p. 153). In Dr. Villarreal’s |
class, we learned how to use Twitter as a method for communication to our schools. With the #satchat hashtag, Twitter has allowed me to engage in insightful conversation in a webinar format. I have been able to share and learn the best practices to improve student learning while engaging with educational leaders throughout the country. I have also used Twitter to share my classroom experiences by using the district’s hashtag, #wave. As an educational leader, I will use social media as a powerful tool to provide transparency to the culture and learning that occurs in the classroom, within a school, or throughout a district.
The administrator is the face of the school. I must be able to shape the culture of the school through high expectations of rigorous academic work that is facilitated by teachers and learned by students. I will continue to implement rigorous curriculum found in the IB program to provide learning that is reflective, based on inquiry, and utilizes technology. Sustaining the culture of educational excellence is key for a new administrator. |
