As the face of the school, an administrator must model a professional code of ethics and leadership.
In Dr. McNamara’s class, 616 A, I interviewed two administrators to gain insight into how laws are used by administrators. One administrator was in his first year as an assistant principal and the other administrator was a retired principal who filled in vacancies when administrators retired or moved positions. Both administrators mentioned how discipline was a key priority in keeping the environment of the school safe. From this experience, I learned as an educational leader, I must be consistent when implementing discipline to each student. As a new administrator, it is important for me to keep current with the educational court cases and understand the decisions that arose from the court cases. I need to continue to support students by building relationships between students, teachers, and parents and advocate for the student’s needs. As an aspiring administrator I want to be able make decisions from a holistic approach when dealing with |
students, families, and teachers. Creating trustworthy relationships between these entities are invaluable for student success. The veteran administrator’s biggest concern was that administrators often do not make the difficult decisions when teachers become unproductive. To become an effective administrator I will continue to reflect on my own personal and professional practices and use these experiences to motivate teachers to become reflective instructors that will ultimately benefit students and their opportunities to learn. The veteran administrator also gave me a list of legal references found in school board policy and California Education Code that he uses most often. To further my knowledge in school law, I will need to research and familiarize myself with this list. While I know I have only skimmed the surface of educational law, I know that I have created and will continue to create a network of individuals who I trust can help and guide my future decisions as an administrator.
In Dr. Jose Villarreal’s class, we learned about Instructional Rounds (IR). IR is an observational |
practice that is rooted in the instructional core:
teacher, student, and content (City, Elmore, Firaman, & Teitel, 2006). My district and school site have adopted IR as a tool to improve student learning. My involvement in the IR network has allowed me to utilize observational teachers practices as data to establish a positive and collaborative professional environment that provides critical feedback of teacher practice at the site. The network that has been established through IR at VHS will provide the direction for: school culture, Depth of Knowledge, Professional Learning Communities, and Common Core State Standards integration. As a school administrator, I must model a high standard of professional ethics and fairness to teachers, students, parents, and the community. I will continue to use reflection on my personal leadership practices as positive influences to motivate the performance of teachers. I will continue to encourage others to become inspirational leaders and develop a high level of performance, commitment, and motivation. |
