An educational leader understands the greater political, social, economical, legal, and cultural context of the school community and can leverage its resources for the success of all students.
In Dr. McCoy’s resource allocation class, 616 B, I created an informational brochure that indicated Vista Unified School District’s current state of LCAP. Within this brochure, I wanted to highlight programs that benefited students such as the Regional Occupational Program, and the after school 21st century program. Within the brochure, I inserted the stakeholder feedback on specific school board goals. The chart indicated that the lowest priority for stakeholders was increasing the proficiency in visual and performing arts. The two highest priorities were increasing proficiency in math, English language arts, and graduation rates. It is interesting to note that attracting and retaining teachers was of medium priority to stakeholders. This is important because the teacher’s union is currently in impasse in regards to a new teacher contract. |
This brochure was also important because it allowed me to understand the division of expenditures throughout the district and the average daily allowance (ADA) that is given to the district per student. I also received greater understanding of how the Local Control Funding Formula will provide more funding specifically to English learners, foster students, and low income students.
The context map used throughout the course was an important document to understand the trends that occurred throughout the administrative credential program. The context map provided information on the social and cultural trends, political and legal issues, economic climate, educational trends, support factors, school goals, and barriers and uncertainties. As an administrator, it is important to understand how all of these factors play a role in providing students with an education that will give them the best opportunity for success after high school. Even in two years of being in this program, it is evident with Common Core State Standards |
and Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) that many changes will be occurring in education over the next few years and will continue to change for the unforeseeable future. I will continue to educate stakeholders on the importance of the LCAP and how it will provide parents, students, teachers, and the community with the information necessary to improve education for students who are at risk. It is my goal to continue to be current with these changes as they progress to provide teachers, students, and parents with the information necessary to achieve educational excellence.
As a school leader, I must be able to work with the district and school board to support the learning of students. I must continue to use my skills to be able to support policies and distribute resources equally amongst all students. I will also utilize communication as a key factor in making sure that all stakeholders have a voice in the school, especially as schools implement the Common Core State Standards and LCFF. |
